Small Acts, Big Impact: Earth Day 2025

Small Acts, Big Impact: Earth Day 2025

| April 17, 2025

We hear statistics about climate change every day: it's a massive, planet-sized problem. And sometimes, trying to do your bit can feel like a tiny drop in a very large, warming ocean. But those little drops do add up. That's the spirit of Earth Day. Forget needing a superhero cape or a trust fund to make a difference. According to an article by the Washington Post, there are some simple, everyday things that we can do every day, starting with that morning shower.

1. Take it Down a Notch: Ever feel like you're practically bathing in a cloud? While those hot showers feel amazing, dialing down the temperature just a bit (or even going full cold for a brave minute!) can save energy and cash. The same goes for your laundry, dishes and your thermostat. Turning down the heat just one degree can trim your energy use by about one percent. Crank it down 7-10 degrees when you're sleeping or out of the house and you could save a whopping 10% annually.

2. Multi-task on Your Walks: Walking your dog? Taking a hike? Embrace your inner Swede and go "plalking"! It's simple: pick up litter as you go. It will keep your neighborhood or surrounding areas tidy while also stopping nasty stuff from getting into our water and soil and saving critters from plastic waste. Arm yourself with a bag, some reusable gloves, and maybe even one of those grabber tools for extra plalking power.

3. Add Some Green to Your Space: Plants are not only beautiful, but they're the ultimate renewable resource. Forget forking out cash for a new plant that's been shipped halfway across the country. Learn the magic of propagation! Spring is the perfect time to get those cuttings rooting and thriving in the warmth and sunlight.

4. Game Responsibly: Calling all the 3.2 billion gamers out there! Did you know many popular video games now have an "eco mode"? You might have to dig into the settings to turn it on, but most players won't even notice a dip in graphics. But guess what? All those gamers powering up their consoles add up to some serious greenhouse gas emissions – more than 5 million cars worth in the US alone each year! And that number's only set to grow. So, go green while you game!

5. Meatless Monday (or Any Day!): Consider incorporating more plant-based meals into your week. Even one or two meat-free days can make a surprising difference for the environment. Raising livestock, particularly cattle, contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, requires vast amounts of land and water, and can drive deforestation. By choosing delicious plant-based proteins like lentils, beans, nuts, and tofu, you're directly reducing your environmental footprint.

So there you have it. No grand gestures needed. Just a few simple shifts in your daily routine can make a real difference, both for the planet and how you feel about your place in it. This Earth Day, try incorporating one or two of these suggestions into your routine and experience the power of collective action. Let's make every day a little more Earth Day!
