October is here, and with it comes the 22nd annual Cybersecurity Awareness Month. While it’s a great time to focus on security, the truth is that cyber threats happen every day. For your business, protecting your data, your customers, and your team is a 24/7/365 job.
So, where do you start? Here are four strategies from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the National Cybersecurity Alliance that businesses and their employees can use to stay cybersecure throughout the year:
- Use Strong Passwords and a Password Manager. Cybercriminals can easily crack simple passwords. Require employees to use strong passwords for all work-related accounts—at least 16 characters long, random, and unique for each service. To make this seamless, mandate the use of a password manager. These secure, easy-to-use tools create, store, and automatically fill in complex passwords, removing the burden from your team.
- Implement Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). MFA adds a powerful layer of security by requiring two or more credentials to verify a user's identity. Even if a password is stolen, this second check prevents unauthorized access to your devices, networks, and databases. If a service you use offers MFA, enable it.
- Recognize and Report Phishing Attempts. Many of the most damaging cyberattacks begin with a single click on a phishing email. Train your employees to spot the red flags—like alarming language or offers that seem too good to be true—and instruct them to report suspicious messages immediately through proper IT channels instead of clicking. If you suspect a breach, report it to your insurance partners and the appropriate authorities without delay.
- Keep All Software Updated. Software updates often contain critical patches for security vulnerabilities. Installing these updates as soon as they become available is one of the easiest and most effective ways to protect your organization from known threats.
