Reimagining the Office: Benefits of "Going Green"

| August 29, 2024

"Going green" in the workplace isn't just about recycling or energy-saving measures. It's about creating a healthier, more sustainable work environment.

Several studies, including those conducted by the University of California, Los Angeles, Institute of the Environment and Sustainability, Rocky Mountain Institute and the U.S. Department of Energy—have shown that green practices and work environments lead to reduced absenteeism, depression and stress, as well as increased employee productivity. Studies show that green offices are not just eco-friendly; they're also employee-friendly.

Tips for a Greener Office

Ready to make a change? Here are some practical steps:

    1. Bring nature indoors:Place indoor gardens and/or lots of natural foliage around the office. This will also increase air quality.
    2. Harness the sun: Maximize natural light with strategic window placement and blinds. Situate workstations near windows employees have some exposure to natural light.
    3. Breathe easy: Increase air flow throughout the office and make sure you are providing good ventilation for your employees. This will also help to prevent the spread of illnesses through the office.
    4. Reduce waste: Go digital with documents in place of paper handouts. This will eliminate clutter as well as waste.
    5. Clean with Care: Use nontoxic cleaning products in the bathrooms and on work surfaces.
    6. Encourage activity: Promote stair use and provide bike storage.
    7. Choose sustainable materials: Opt for low-VOC paints, adhesives, and furnishings.

These changes can turn your drab office into a thriving green space that benefits both employees and the planet.
