America is turning 250 this year, and Fourth of July celebrations may feel a little bigger, louder, and more festive than usual. Many of us are ready for the backyard barbecues, time with family, block parties, and fireworks.
But because the holiday can also bring more traffic, more late nights, and more alcohol, we wanted to step away from the corporate talk for a minute and share a simple reminder about something that affects every community: getting home safely.
Nobody wants a heavy lecture right before a holiday weekend. But the reality is that the Fourth of July is one of the most dangerous times of the year to be on the road. Over a recent five-year stretch, more than 2,600 people lost their lives in vehicle crashes during the July Fourth holiday period, and nearly 40% of drivers killed were drunk.
That is not just a statistic. Those are families, friends, passengers, pedestrians, and other drivers whose lives changed in a moment.
Most people do not set out to make a dangerous choice. They tell themselves, “I only had a couple,” or “I’m fine,” or “It’s just a short drive.” But even a small amount of alcohol can affect reflexes, judgment, attention, and reaction time. If you feel any effect at all, or if you are even questioning whether you should drive, please do not take the chance.
A safe ride home does not have to be complicated. It just needs to be part of the plan before the first drink is poured:
- Plan the ride ahead of time. Choose a designated driver, schedule a rideshare, call a taxi, or decide ahead of time where people can stay if they should not drive.
- Even after one drink, let someone else drive. If you have been drinking, hand the keys to someone who has not. No arguments. No ego. Just the safer choice.
- Be the friend who steps in. If someone at a party has had too much and is trying to drive, take the keys. Arrange a ride. Offer the couch. They may be annoyed for a minute, but getting home safely matters more.
- Stock the cooler if you are hosting. Make sure there are plenty of water, sodas, and nonalcoholic options available so guests can pace themselves and make good choices.
- Buckle up and stay alert. Always wear your seat belt, even for a short drive. If you see someone swerving or driving dangerously, pull over safely and call 911.
We want you to have an incredible, historic celebration this weekend. Eat too much food. Enjoy the 250th birthday celebration. Spend time with the people you love. Look out for your neighbors. And make sure everyone gets home safely.
Happy Fourth of July from all of us at DiNicola Insurance Services.
