October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a time to highlight the growing importance of digital security. In an era where our lives are increasingly interconnected with technology, protecting our personal and professional information has never been more critical.
This year's theme, "Secure Our World," serves as a reminder that businesses must stay cybersecure to safeguard company data, protect customers’ personal information and ensure employee privacy.
Here are four strategies from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the National Cybersecurity Alliance that businesses and their employees can use to stay cybersecure throughout the year:
- Strengthen Your Passwords: Don't fall victim to easily guessable passwords. Require employees to use strong, unique passwords that are at least 16 characters long, combining letters, numbers, and symbols. Consider using a password manager to simplify this process.
- Lock Down with Multifactor Authentication (MFA): Add an extra layer of security by requiring users to verify their identity with multiple methods, such as a password and a code sent to their phone. MFA makes it significantly harder for unauthorized individuals to gain access.
- Educate Employees About the Dangers of Phishing Attacks. Teach them to spot suspicious emails, texts, or calls that try to trick them into revealing personal information or downloading malicious software. Encourage employees to report any suspicious activity immediately.
- Stay Updated, Stay Secure: Keep your software and operating systems up-to-date. Regular updates often include critical security patches that can protect against vulnerabilities. Make it a priority to install these updates as soon as they become available.
Remember, cybersecurity is a shared responsibility. By adopting these strategies and staying vigilant, we can collectively contribute to a safer and more secure digital world.
