Are E-Cigs a Threat to San Francisco Healthcare Liability?

Recent developments have raised concern over the health of the public, according to a report from the LA Times. Many healthcare providers are wondering if rather than being a solution to smoking, e-cigs are actually just an additional threat to public health and safety.  As a result, state health officials are calling for tighter regulation of the devices, and announced last month that they will be implementing an educational campaign to combat their use.

According to California’s Department of Public Health, e-cigarette use among young adults ages 18 to 29 has tripled in California, between the years of 2012 and 2013. State health officer Dr. Ron Chapman issued a statement during a conference stating that he advises Californians to avoid using e-cigarettes, claiming the re-normalize smoking behavior and are re-introducing a new generation to nicotine addiction.

The key question among proponents of e-cigarettes has been, “Are e-cigs helping smokers quit or simply getting more people hooked on nicotine and exposed to a different set of toxic chemicals?” There has been no comprehensive study done yet on the health effects of e-cigs, therefore healthcare facilities and vaping organizations continue to debate over whether these vaping devices are in fact dangerous.

According to the American Vaping Assn. president Gregory Conley, “It’s public health malpractice eto tell an adult who is inhaling burning smoke into their lungs on a daily basis that they shouldn’t even try to quit smoking [by] using vaping.”

The problem is, according to health experts, that the use of e-cigs is surpassing traditional cigarette use, and young adults 18-29 have become three times more likely to use e-cigarettes than people over 30, according to one survey. This research suggests that instead of being a solution, e-cigs are in fact just a trend or a fad; and an unhealthy one at that.

This debate raises an interesting question for healthcare providers; should they recommend e-cigs as a smoking cessation product to their patients, or would doing so create an undue healthcare liability exposure for their practice?
